Where to Travel Based On Your Myers-Briggs Personality Type

Tired of listicles that just tell you to “go to Paris?” Same. Travel isn’t one-size-fits-all and neither are you.

If you’ve ever arrived somewhere everyone raved about and thought, this isn’t me at all, maybe it’s time to stop following the crowd and start traveling by personality type.

Ever taken the Myers-Briggs test? It’s a personality assessment based on Carl Jung’s theories.

Pinterest pin graphic for travel destinations based on your Myers-Briggs personality type

It’s designed to reveal how you take in information, make decisions, and navigate the world. It sorts people into 16 personality types based on four core traits:

– How you get energy (Extraversion vs. Introversion)
– How you process information (Sensing vs. Intuition)
– How you make decisions (Thinking vs. Feeling)
– How you approach structure (Judging vs. Perceiving)

These form a four letter code that reflects your basic personality style. For me, it’s surprisingly spot on.

So here’s a travel guide with a twist: destinations in Europe and the U.S. chosen to match each of the 16 Myers-Briggs types. These aren’t random picks.

They’re grounded in personality psychology, mood, and travel style. No influencer hype. Just some thoughtful recommendations (3-4 each) that might actually fit.

Best Places to Travel Based on Your Personality

1. INTJ – The Strategist

Personality Type: Strategic, independent, and intensely focused. You love deep dives, quiet confidence, and elegant structure.
Where to go:

  • Vienna, Austria – Refined, intellectual, and steeped in classical culture.
  • Edinburgh, Scotland – Brooding history and moody charm, with a bookish edge.
  • Madrid, Spain – Heavyweight art, powerful history, and thoughtful design.
  • London, UK – Balance of history, grit, culture, and modernity.

This is me every time I take the Myers-Briggs: INTJ to the core. It tends to make me a cranky sophisticate when I travel (usually solo).

The ideal INTJ trip? Somewhere thought-provoking, light on cliches, and (sometimes) mercifully free of crowds.

Big cities can be catnip for INTJs though. They offer art, architecture, music, and ideas. All with enough anonymity to vanish into the background and quietly take it all in.

Victoria Street in Edinburgh
Victoria Street in Edinburgh

Vienna fits the bill. It’s refined, orderly, and steeped in history. Baroque palaces, world-class museums, and hushed cafes create the perfect setting for deep thought and solo exploration. Without the hassle or noise.

Edinburgh, rugged and storied, has enchanted thinkers for centuries. The city’s layered history and literary pedigree (hello, first UNESCO City of Literature) give it real substance.

And while it buzzes with artists, chefs, and creatives, INTJs may want to avoid the crowd-fueled chaos of the Christmas markets.

Then there’s Madrid. It’s grand without being showy. The city is all broad boulevards, stately museums, and intellectual weight.

Calle Cava Baja in Madrid
Calle Cava Baja in Madrid

Popular, yes, but it never feels like it’s performing for tourists. You can blend in, observe, and dig deep. A thinking city that doesn’t scream for attention? That’s INTJ heaven.

London is one of my favorite cities in the world. It’s intellectual and complex, with endless layers to analyze: politics, cultural sites, hidden histories, pastel houses, and niche bookshops.

INTJs will enjoy crafting a personalized itinerary and finding depth beyond the tourist hotspots in all the hidden gems, nerdy spots, and amazing art museums.

2. INTP – The Thinker

Personality Type: Analytical, curious, and idea driven. You seek out quiet corners and cerebral stimulation.
Where to go:

  • Cambridge, either one (UK or US) – Scholarly serenity with centuries of academic tradition.
  • Reykjavík, Iceland – Peaceful, oddball, and brimming with quiet wonder.
  • Princeton, NJ, USA – Bookstores, campuses, and calm intellect.

The two Cambridges are a quiet delight for the INTP mind.

Cambridge, Massachusetts blends world class universities with leafy streets and beautiful architecture. It’s a haven for thinkers who thrive in intellectually rich environments.

Across the Atlantic, Cambridge England offers a more storybook version of the same: serene courtyards, punting on the river, and centuries old colleges that invite quiet reflection. And it’s quieter than Oxford, which sees more tourists.

Reykjavík is another strong match for INTPs. It’s low-key, calm, and full of eccentric charm. It’s just stimulating enough to keep the mind engaged without tipping into sensory overload.

The literary culture runs deep here (Iceland publishes more books per capita than any other country), and the city’s walkable layout encourages slow wandering and independent thought. Add in cozy cafes and bookshops, and it’s ideal for solo introspection.

Then there’s Princeton, a compact yet cultured gem between New York and Philadelphia. With its elegant streets, historic homes, and the intellectual hum of the university, Princeton is a haven for curious minds. It’s a place that rewards quiet exploration and offers plenty of space (mental and literal) to think.

3. ENTJ – The Commander

Personality Type: Bold, decisive, charismatic, and goal oriented. You like your cities efficient, impressive, and fast paced.
Where to go:

  • New York City, USA – Ambition, hustle, and endless opportunity.
  • Berlin, Germany – Gritty productivity meets cutting-edge innovation.
  • Zurich, Switzerland – Clean, powerful, and quietly elite.

New York, New York, it’s a helluva town, as the song says. As a center of power and ambition, it’s the perfect big city for the commander.

ENTJs are drawn to power, opportunity, and challenge it presents. New York is where ambitious people go to make things happen.

ENTJs are naturally competitive and goal driven. NYC rewards hustle and leadership like no other.

Museum Island in Berlin
Museum Island in Berlin

Berlin’s tumultuous history and cultural vibrancy make it one of the most unique and exciting cities in Europe, if not the world. It’s a dynamic, modern city with 178 museums and a truckload of history.

Berlin doesn’t ask for permission to be bold and doesn’t sugarcoat. It’s packed with backbone, a lure to an ENTJ.

Zurich makes sense for the ENTJ type because it’s structured, ambitious, and high-functioning, exactly like they are.

Zurich is clean, well-run, and punctual to a fault. ENTJs thrive in environments that reflect their own drive for organization and performance.

4. ENTP – The Visionary

Personality Type: Energetic, witty, and always scheming something new. You crave variety and stimulation.
Where to go:

  • Lisbon, Portugal – Hilly, historic, and effortlessly cool.
  • Seville, Spain – Drama, flamenco, and color.
  • Austin, Texas, USA – Weird, loud, and full of side projects.

Lisbon works for the ENTP because it’s a city of infinite variety.

It’s layered and alive. You’ve got street art in Barrio, experimental art in museums, tiled facades in Aflama, and Fado music wafting softly.

Lisbon isn’t as manicured as, say Vienna. It’s more improvisational. The LX Factory alone is an ENTP playground.

Seville

Seville is also a great match for an ENTP. The city moves. It’s dramatic, passionate, and full of flair.

It’s a place that’s warm, sociable, and walkable. And all of that comes unapologetically, as you are getting crushed in a tapas bar.

Austin is a near perfect ENTP fit. ENTPs love being the devil’s advocate and Austin’s motto is “Keep Austin Weird.”

This is a town of inventors, novelty projects, and unconventional thinking. This is the place for self starters and iconoclasts.

5. INFJ – The Advocate

Personality Type: Private, insightful, and driven by ideals. You’re drawn to beauty that whispers, not shouts.
Where to go:

  • Tallinn, Estonia – Fairy tale meets solitude in this Baltic gem.
  • Val d’Orca, Tuscany – Poetic landscapes and quiet medieval villages.
  • Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA – Mystical, artsy, and contemplative.

Tallinn is a great match for INFJs. The Old Town is storybook Gothic, which will fuel the INFJs love of atmosphere and history.

It has a quiet hum, not a blaring buzz. And an undercurrent of indie cool with angsty cafes and bookstores where no one bothers you.

Montepulciano in the Val d’Orca

The Val d’Orcia in southern Tuscany is dreamy, beautiful blend of history and scenery, offering some of the most pristine and picturesque views in Tuscany.

With its rolling hills in shades of ochre and green, dense pine woods, olive groves, and vineyards, the Val d’Orcia is also known for its natural hot springs and charming walled hilltop towns.

Plus, it’s not really saturated by influencers like other parts of Tuscany (Florence, Siena, San Gimignano) and Italy (Positano). Perfect for the privacy craving INFJ.

Santa Fe is a soulful, introspective place, perfect for the INFJ. Its blend of adobe architecture, spiritual energy, indigenous and artistic traditions.

Quiet natural beauty gives this idealistic type space to reflect, create, and connect with deeper meaning. It’s a destination that feels both timeless and deeply personal.

  • The Cotswolds, England – Cozy stone cottages and timeless beauty.
  • Ravello, Italy – Quiet, dreamy, and full of poetic charm.

This garden sanctuary, dreamed up by Claude Monet, is all soft color, quiet paths, and fragrant air. It’s a perfect place to get lost in thought or fill a notebook with musings.

Arlington Row In Bibury

The Cotswolds bring that same gentle magic to the gentle-souled INFP.

With golden stone cottages, winding lanes, and villages that look drawn from a fairytale, it’s a landscape tailor made for the idealist soul.

And in Ravello, perched high above the Amalfi Coast, beauty meets stillness.

It’s a haven of blooming wisteria terraces, quiet corners, and wide open skies. Just right for an old soul in search of peace, inspiration, and blue water vistas.

7. ENFJ – The Connector

Personality Type: Warm, charismatic, and always rooting for others. You thrive in places with energy and heart.
Where to go:

  • Barcelona, Spain – Colorful, passionate, and made for connection.
  • California, USA – Progressive, creative, and people-focused.
  • Florence, Italy – History, beauty, and soul in every piazza.

With over 2,000 years of history and a glittering present, Barcelona is an intense urban ride for travelers. It’s an open air museum of Modernism, and comes complete with cutting edge museums and amazing eateries.

It has a warm, ever so Spanish, intensity perfect for the ENFJ. You can stroll Las Ramblas and people watch, go tapas bar hopping, and stay up all night in El Born.

Balboa Park in San Diego
Balboa Park in San Diego

California is an ENFJ hotbed, and several cities would suit. For a grounded, not year intellectual ENFJ, San Diego is sunny, friendly, and steady with a focus on wellness and coastal beauty.

San Francisco has a strong mix of art, activism, and community that might appeal to the more idealist ENFJ. But it’s a little emotionally heavier too.

Los Angeles might suit an ENFJ who’s magnetic, expressive, and image savvy. The city offers a lot. And yet, the downside is that it can feel status-conscious and surface level for someone who wants a genuine connection.

Florence has the ideal blend of beauty, meaning, people, and purpose for an ENFJ. The Renaissance art stirs souls and the human history is everywhere.

8. ENFP – The Free Spirit

Personality Type: Playful, curious, and always chasing meaning. You want magic around every corner.
Where to go:

  • Naples, Italy – Wild, flavorful, and alive with chaos.
  • Dublin, Ireland – Stories, music, and a pub for every mood.
  • New Orleans, USA – Spirit, style, and a whole lot of soul.
  • Amsterdam, Netherlands – Laid-back, dynamic, progressive.

Naples is messy, chaotic, and full of heart. It wears its Italian identity proudly, with zero interest in polishing the rough edges.

One minute you’re dodging scooters, the next you’re devouring the best pizza of your life alongside a shouting crowd. For the ENFP, it’s all part of the fun.

Temple Bar area in Dublin
Temple Bar area of Dublin

Dublin is equally spirited. It’s a city packed with charm, historic pubs, and enough music, chatter, and global flavors to keep any extroverted explorer entertained.

There’s always a new story waiting around the corner. Or across the bar. And the Irish are inquisitive and up for conversation.

Then there’s New Orleans. It’s vibrant, mysterious, and a little unhinged.

From ghost tours to jazz clubs and late-night bites of po’boys or beignets, it’s a playground for the curious and the bold. Perfect for ENFPs who crave experience over order.

Amsterdam is ideal for the free spirit. It has an infamously liberal reputation. It’s relaxed, creative, and open-minded. You can bike along canals with no set plan, linger in cozy cafés, or get lost in art and indie shops.

The city embraces individuality, weed, and quiet eccentricity, making it a haven for travelers who value freedom and authenticity.

Bruges is a Belgian gem that appeals to the ISTJ’s appreciation for structure, history, and quiet charm.

This medieval town is impeccably preserved and easy to navigate, with well-marked lanes, orderly canals, and reliable pleasures like mussels, frites, rich chocolate, and excellent beer.

Roman Baths in Bath
Roman Baths in Bath

Bath offers similar appeal. It’s elegant, well-planned, and steeped in tradition. Its Georgian architecture and Roman heritage are testaments to thoughtful design and historical continuity.

Walking its neat streets feels like stepping into a page of English history, something an ISTJ will quietly admire.

Philadelphia is a grounded, no-nonsense American city with deep roots. Its Revolutionary landmarks, classic grid layout, and proud work ethic align well with the ISTJ’s respect for legacy and function.

Grasmere in the English Lake District

The English Lake District is another near perfect match. For the introvert drawn to tradition, it offers serene lakes, quiet trails, gentle hills, and misty landscapes. Find a cozy teahouse and read Wordsworth.

Savannah’s slow pace, moss-draped oaks, and historic homes will also appeal to the ISFJs love of beauty, history, and calmness.

It’s quietly romantic with cobbled lanes made for aimless wandering. And if the ISFJ wants more than just pretty, it’s also has an offbeat, artsy current.

Acorn Street in Boston
Acorn Street in Boston

Rotterdam is modern, clean, and purpose-built. Trams run like clockwork and it’s not full of tourist fluff and Instagram spots. It’s no frills, all function and much less chaotic than Amsterdam.

It’s also a place of design, innovative, and tech. The architecture itself will knock your socks off.

Boston’s another ideal spot. It’s a honey trap of academic prestige meets practical order.

It’s historic, but not stuck in the past. Like the ESTJ, Boston is fast, a little intense, cool, and has a serious work ethic. It’s not a laid back or flakey city that wouldn’t fit an ESTJ.

Valencia is another ideal location for the ESFJ. Seville works too, but I already used that above.

aerial view of Valencia
Valencia

Valencia is lively, friendly, and less touristy than Seville.

It’s social, sunny, and stylish. It’s the sweet spot for someone who wants to throw a proper party or host drinks on the beach.

Charleston is a classic southern city with elan and grace. As you walk through its streets, you’ll find candy-colored houses, beautiful gardens, cute shops, history museums, and killer eateries.

It’s a beautiful and savory environment for an ESFJ. With a culture rooted in courtesy and conversation.

The Scottish Highlands are rugged and no nonsense. It’s a place to explore off the grid. A place where introversion isn’t just accepted. It’s assumed.

Dolomites
Dolomites

The Dolomites fit ISTPs to a tee. The terrain is a bit feral, and there are endless opportunities for hiking, biking, and climbing. The vibe is low key too. It’s just you and nature.

The Dolomites are perfect for the ISTP who may want to wake up early, climb a peak, and enjoy lunch in silence with a view.

Peaceful Lanpland is also an excellent destination for an ISTP. They thrive on doing things on their own. And Lapland has wide open landscapes and plenty of snowshoeing and husky sledding to be had.

  • Tuscany, Italy – Rolling hills and art at every turn.
  • Taos, New Mexico, USA – Earth tones and soul soothing vistas.
  • Paris, France – Romantic, artsy, polished, and idealized.

Provence has attracted artists like Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, and Cezanne for centuries. It’s a dreamy melange of orchards, vineyard, lavender fields, Roman ruins … and even flamingos.

There are cobbled lanes and houses with faded French blue shutters and trailing geranium. The sun-drenched light and lavender landscapes are perfect for the sensitive artist type.

Tuscany

Tuscany has a similar vibe. It’s equally dreamy, with rolling hills, spikey cypress trees, and sunflowers.

You can have the quintessential Italian village experience, complete with fine wine and delectable food. And the art of Tuscany! It’s sprinkled all over the small towns and churches.

Taos (or Santa Fe) will also appeal to the ISFP. It’s a place where an artist’s soul meets natural beauty.

It’s a working artist’s community, but not a flashy one. There are painters, weavers, and potters who stay out of the spotlight but make beautiful work.

Even though it’s a big city, Paris might work for this personality type too. ISFPs love beauty, sensuality, and art. Montmartre, the Marais, and the Saint-Germain are all great matches for a dreamer.

These natural performers thrive in places full of energy and connection. And Ibiza delivers with music, dancing, sunshine, and a crowd ready to celebrate life.

As an INTJ, Miami is decidedly not my favorite. It’s all about energy, social buzz, and flashy fun.

Miami’s nonstop nightlife, vibrant street life, colorful art scene, and beach culture make it perfect for someone who loves spontaneity and sensory stimulation. It’s loud, fast, and extroverted.

Rome: The Universal City

Rome is one of those few destinations with something for everyone: introspective INTJ, a free-spirited ENFP, a romantic ISFP, or a tradition-loving ISFJ.

Its layers of history, art, food, and vibrant street life make it endlessly adaptable. You can dive deep into ancient ruins, get lost in Renaissance beauty, sip wine on a quiet piazza, or follow your whims through the alleyways of Trastevere.

The key is when and how you go. It’s a thinking city for those who crave meaning, a feast for those who love beauty, and an adventure for anyone curious.

Just don’t go in summer if you’re an introvert who hate crowds!
