What To Do in Adare, One Of Ireland’s Prettiest Villages

Adare, in County Limerick, is often hailed as Ireland’s prettiest town—though I wouldn’t go quite that far!

Still, it’s undeniably charming. And its popularity as a wedding destination speaks volumes about its beauty.

The picturesque thatched cottages lining the Main Street play a big role in creating that idyllic, storybook feel that makes Adare so special.

It’s not a big town. I’d call it more of a village actually. And you should be able to see it all in half a day or so.

Still, for such a small place, it’s packed with historic sites, gorgeous houses, great pubs, and nummy eateries.

This all makes it well worth a day trip from Limerick or Galway.

Best Things To Do In Adare

For a whirlwind tour, start on the eastern end of the town.

Desmond Castle

As you cross the River Maigue, you’ll see the impressive ruins of a 12th century castle.

It’s named after the powerful family of lords who last owned the place in the medieval era.

You can’t visit it on your own, which is a shame. But you can book a guided tour through the Adare Heritage Centre in town, which is also the meeting point for the tour.

Running only from July 1st to September 30th, this one hour tour offers an up close look at one of Ireland’s most picturesque Norman castles, with stories that bring its centuries old walls to life.

Franciscan Friary

Another imposing ruin is the Franciscan Friary.

Established in 1464 by the Earl of Kildare, it’s one of three monastic ruins in Adare, alongside the Augustinian and Trinitarian priories.

The friary is known for its graceful arches and remnants of Gothic architecture.

The friary is slap bang in the middle of Adare Manor golf course.

But you can still access it. Just watch out for golf balls!

Augustinian Friary
Augustinian Friary

Augustinian Friary

The Augustinian Friary, also known as Adare Friary, dates back to 1315, when it was founded by the Earls of Kildare.

Originally established for Augustinian monks, it’s known for its impressive Gothic architecture, including pointed arches, elegant windows, and a well-preserved cloister.

The friary was converted into a Protestant church during the Reformation. This is likely why it’s still so well preserved today.

Adare Manor Hotel

Next up is the Adare Manor Hotel on the left. It’s a Neo-Gothic confection with a dramatic setting.

Set on hundreds of acres with a flowing river and a storybook village nearby, this manor feels like a step back in time. After the priciest renovation in Ireland’s history, it’s now more luxurious than ever.

A new wing, done in soft grey granite, blends perfectly with the 19th century original. And the manor? It has 365 leaded windows, 52 chimneys, seven pillars, and four towers.

If you can’t afford to stay there, drop in for a pint or afternoon tea in front of a crackling fire.

Thatched Cottages

Apart from the historic sites, the real charm of Adare is in its thatched cottages, which may remind you of the Cotswolds.

They were built in the 1830s as part of the Dunraven estate. This is where the Earl stashed servants working for him, not a bad perk.

Today, they serve mostly as restaurants tearooms, crafts shops, etc.

Many of them have colorful doors. Sometimes the flowers even match the cottages! It’s all so well done and, well, adorable.

The other buildings on Main Street are delightful too, and very colorful in the Irish fashion.

Trinitarian Abbey

Trinitarian Abbey

The Trinitarian Abbey was founded in the 13th century. It’s a lovey old building complex and the best preserved of the three.

Originally founded in the 13th century by the Trinitarian Order, it’s the only remaining example of a Trinitarian monastery in Ireland.

The abbey sits in a scenic spot along the River Maigue, adding a picturesque element to its historic charm.

Today, it’s used as the Catholic parish church for Adare, the Holy Trinity Abbey Church. You should walk inside to admire the stained glass and wooden ceiling.

Adare Park

The Adare Town Park is a lovely green space in the heart of Adare village, perfect for a relaxing stroll or a family outing.

It’s landscaped with vibrant flower beds, tree-lined walkways, flower trellises, and beautifully kept lawns. There are a couple mammoth groupings of tree size rhododendrons in all colors.

It’s a peaceful setting with benches and picnic spots to enjoy the surroundings.

Pubs & Restaurants

There’s a nice collection of pretty pubs and restaurants in Adare for lunch or dinner.

For a special meal, try 1826 Adare. It’s an award-winning restaurant known for its cozy, rustic setting in a thatched cottage and a farm-to-table menu using local ingredients.

The Blue Door serves up Irish classics in a lovely stone building with outdoor seating under fairy lights. The menu includes everything from beer-battered fish and chips to an Irish beef burger.

Oak & Apple offers innovative small plates. It’s a tapas-style restaurant combines local Irish ingredients with a creative twist.

It also has a robust wine list with organic options, craft beers, and ciders from around Ireland.

Aunty Lena's Pub
Aunty Lena’s Pub

I enjoyed the Sunday roast at Aunty Lena’s Bar.

Right in the heart of the village, Aunty Lena’s combines Irish tradition with a unique dining setup in a converted historic courthouse.

With an emphasis on quality pub food, it’s a great place for a pint and a bite after exploring the village. Plus, it won Pub of the Year in 2023!

Another popular watering hole is Bill Chawke’s Bar.

Known for its lively atmosphere, this pub serves up classic Irish pub dishes like bacon and cabbage and beef stew. It’s popular with locals and visitors alike.

Golfing

Ireland is filled with tremendous golf courses. And Adare is no different.

Adare Manor Golf Course is located on the grounds of the luxurious Adare Manor. It’s one of the premier golfing destinations in Ireland.

Designed by the renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio, the course was extensively renovated and reopened in 2018. It features world class facilities and meticulously maintained greens.

The course has hosted notable tournaments, including the Irish Open. And it will be the venue for the 2027 Ryder Cup.

It seems counterintuitive to me that Ireland is such a golfing mecca with all the wind and rain. But the rolling terrain and constant greenery make up for that I guess .
